Promise Keepers crowned Nigeria’s top flight with a resounding victory over their fans at Uyo on Sunday.
Aqua United won the 2020-21 Nigeria Professional Football League title when they beat MFMFC 5-2 in their final match of the season on Sunday.
Charles Atsheman stood for the hosts at Godsol Acapabio Stadium as his goal hat-trick helped crush the Olukia Boys, who have lost their last eight matches on the road.
Atshimen started the score in the 24th minute and then Alimi Adebayo’s own goal at half-time paralyzed the lead which gave Kennedy Boboy a two-goal lead at the half-time break.
Aqua United continued their goal fest after Mfon Udoh made it 3-0 in the 62nd minute.
Six minutes later, the MFM reduced the deficit from the penalty spot through a strike by Michael Ambono, but it was not enough as Atshiman scored his second goal in the 87th minute.
The Olukia Boys responded quickly with their second goal in the 91st minute to make it 4-2 thanks to Dennis Obasi.
The scoring did not end when Atshiman regained a three-goal lead and completed his hat-trick for the Promise Keepers in the 97th minute.
The thrilling match sealed Aqua United’s top position in the NPFL table with 71 points after 37 matches – nine points ahead of second-placed Nasrwa United, who play Ango Rangers on Monday. Is
The winner received the Promise Keepers’ first top-flight crown in its 25-year history and was added to their trophy cabinet, which includes two FA Cups (2015 and 2017) and the Nigeria Super Cup (2016).
On a personal note, Sunday’s bravery increased the number of firefighters to 18 league goals this season and he is tied with Nassarwa United’s Silas Novanko for the Golden Boot award.
Babuye, who moved to Aqua United in December 2019, has now won two NPFL titles since his debut with Plato United in the 2016-17 season.
Aqua United will look to extend their unbeaten run in nine games and end the 2020-21 campaign on a winning note when they visit the Lobby Stars on Thursday.
