The following week, devastating news reached Coronation Street that the legendary Norse Cole had died.
Ken Barlow assures Rita Tanner that Norris wants to meet because he has some important news.
However, he was shocked to hear from his wife, Freda, that Norris had fallen and had been taken to hospital with a suspected stroke.
When Kane, Rita and Mary Taylor arrived at the hospital, they met Freda, an Asian-faced woman who broke the news that Norris had died half an hour earlier.
Back at Rovers Returns, he picked up a toast for the lovingly departed Norse.
In January, it was announced that Corey star Malcolm Hebden had retired from soap after playing 27-year-old Norse Cole.
The 81-year-old actor called it a day after he suffered a heart attack in 2017.
He returned briefly. Crowning street. Cobbler in 2019 with Freda changing the cabin for life at his beloved news agents shop at the Steelwater Retirement Complex.
Malcolm said: “I loved playing Norris and I’m happy to be back shortly after my operation.
“It took a lot of courage to decide to retire, but I realized that although the mind was satisfied, the body was not so much.”
A spokesman for Saban said at the time that he would continue to cite scripts.
He said: “Malcolm decided to retire and leave the show in the summer of 2020 for health reasons.
“While Malcolm is enjoying his retirement at home, Norris will be living in Steel Waters off screen and will be referenced in scripts.”
And Coronation Street producer Ian McLeod had previously said: “In Malcolm’s incredibly skilled hands, Norris Cole became a great Coronation Street character of all time, whose lemon-lipped barbs will always be remembered. ۔
“I know a nation of soap-loving people would be sad to think they’ve seen the last part of Norse, but in their wonderful double work with Emily, Rita and more recently Mary, Malcolm We are left with many wonderful memories in the show.
“I know I speak for all of Malcolm’s colleagues when I wish him well for the next chapter of his life – without him the place would not be the same.”
Norris’ break in 2017 was described as meeting his friend Emily Bishop in Peru.
In late 2018, the owners confirmed that Malcolm would return to soap after recovering from his health problems.
And in July 2019, he spoke for the first time about a “silent heart attack” – and praised the staff at Blackpool Victoria Hospital who saved his life.

Malcolm, who was born in Chester and raised in Burnley, has been playing Gossip Norse since 1994.
Norris first appeared at Weatherfield when he visited the home of Derek and the frustrated Wilton after giving it to Derek, whom he called ‘Dirk’, when he missed his coach from London.
He advised Derek to leave his first wife, Mertel, and stay with her, which he did for three years.
Norris returned on a regular basis in 1999 and became one of Soap’s most famous characters.
The shopkeeper has been one of Corey’s favorite characters, thanks to his hilarious comments and friendship with Marie Taylor and Rita Tanner.
Prior to that, she played Mavis’s Spanish boyfriend Carlos from 1974 to 1975.
