1. A new processor

2. Large sensor with better low light performance
Gopros are great at many things, but like most action cameras, their image quality falls into low light. This is largely due to the fact that they have small sensors, which have a relatively low sensitivity due to the small pixels.
Gopro really made things worse with the GoPro Hero 9 Black by increasing the sensor resolution from 12MP to 23.6MP without increasing the sensor size. Is GoPro likely to be suppressed only in large sensors? We don’t think so. Gopro used Sony IMX277 for three generations of action cameras, Hero 6 Black, Hero 7 Black and Hero 8 Black. It detects the sensor, and instead of upgrading its capabilities, it uses the method of teasing it as much as any other part of the camera, year after year.
The GoPro Hero 9 Black was the first to use the Sony IMX677, and this decision may not have been taken lightly. Another indication is why some of the more impressive sound sensors used in Gopro phones can’t easily slot.
The IMX677 is listed by Sony’s Camera Sensor Division as a component of “DSC” or digital still cameras, as opposed to mobile phones. There is a completely separate category for small mobile sensors and small digital camera sensors, which means that the Go Pro cannot plug into the sensor from the iPhone 12 Pro Max or Sony Xperia 1 III. And according to Sony’s Sensor Division product database, the upcoming Junk IMX677 is not yet a replacement.
Still, the GoPro can certainly outperform the IMX677. This sensor supports DOL-HDR, which allows it to shoot one frame, then the next, and merge them in sequence, instead of capturing short and long exposure data during sensor reader out. ۔
The Gopro Hero 9 Black has HDR still mode, but no HDR video. The DOL-HDR allows for ghost-free HDR, and the company’s reputation for coloring shows that it will outperform the competition. Hopefully, we’ll see it in Hero 10 Black.

The new processor will likely see an improvement in low-light image quality. However, we can’t expect massive leaps here if we are correct in understanding that the Hero 10 Black will use the same sensor as the Hero 9 Black.
3. A 4K / 120p mode
We have a similar problem. The Go Go Hero 10 Black can have 480fps or 960fps slow mode. According to Sony’s documentation, you can get the same frame rate from the Sony IMX677 sensor by reducing the vertical resolution to 209 pixels. No Thanks.
However, there is a big potential improvement, 4K at 120fps. Hero 9 Black Tape released at 2.7K / 120fps. We will take such an upgrade. However, it looks like 1080p will remain the cap for 240fps capture, unless the GoPro Hero 10 introduces reciprocal modes in Black.
Gopro could theoretically incorporate higher frame rate modes without any interference, but they will have to rely on framing until the Hero 10 Black adopts a new sensor.
While this may be a clean addition to the casual crowd, Gopro is unlikely to try to use such techniques without explaining what is happening. For many, GoGo is a professional tool, so eliminating high frame rates as a ‘forgery’ and a real deal seems like an unexpected move.
4. Screen from one edge to the back
The most common complaint about the Gopro Hero 9 black screen is its touch screen response. We think this can be fixed with a new processor. But wouldn’t a slightly larger edge-to-edge display be nice?
Gopro’s current Hero 9 Black has a 2.27-inch screen, which is very similar in size to the DJI Asmo Action’s 2.25-inch screen. And the latter is a small camera.
A larger screen and more responsive software will move the Gopro Hero 10 Black to feel like the next gen action cam. Even if it doesn’t have headline-grabbing features like 8K video.
5. Multicom support
It’s a feature we don’t need ourselves, but it is regularly talked about by die-hard Gogo Pro fans. The GoPro system does not have built-in multi-cam support. You use the current series using multiple cameras at the same time.
You can achieve this by using third party software like OBS Studio. But given that GoPro has been offered live streaming through its app, Multicom seems to have a clear feature to add to it in the future.
And one feature you probably won’t see: 8K video
If you’re expecting the Gopro Hero 9 Black to make a big leap from the maximum 5K capture resolution to 8K, we think you’ll be disappointed. The Sony IMX677 sensor does not have the required resolution for the job, which is 33MP in the 16: 9 sensor or 40 MP in the 3: 2 sensor.
The 1 / 2.3-inch resolution sensor is also a scary idea, as the sensor pixels will be incredibly small. When Goprose has 8K video, they will definitely have bigger sensors than the GoPro Hero 9 Black.
Gopro already exploits the maximum sensor redout resolution in its 5K mode. We expect this limit to continue in the Hero 10 Black, although in this mode the frame rate can be increased from 30fps to 60fps with the help of a theoretically better processor. The sensor is definitely worth it.
Gopro Hero 10 Black: Early Thoughts
Right now we don’t know anything about GoPro Hero 10 Black. But until the Go Pro projection breaks its habit of using sensors for several generations of action cameras, we know what we can really expect.
The Gopro Hero 10 can be significantly more responsive, faster to boot up and use than the Black Hero 9 Black. And the extra processing power can be used to unlock 4K video at 120Kps and capture HDR video in flight at 4K / 60p.
But we don’t think 8K is possible. We also don’t think it’s going to get better all of a sudden in low light (although significant improvements are possible). These changes may come with the next generation, when Gopro is more likely to switch sensors, it has more or less completely breastfed the Sony IMX677.
