Retired central midfielder confident former Kaiser chief coach will improve Cochin
Orlando Pirate legend Benedict Velakazi says the release clause of Memlody Sandowns could prevent Steve Comfella from being transferred to the Orlando Pirates.
Bookers are reportedly in talks with Masandana about hiring experienced strategists before the new 2021/22 season.
Comfella signed a five-year deal with Sunshine in 2020 when he was joining as senior coach in 2020 and will have to buy himself from his current contract to move to another club.
The release clause is said to be in the region of R28 million and the pirates will have to pay to get this 53-year-old strategy.
Velakazi, the Pirates ‘all-time top scorer for the club with 52 goals, feels the release clause is preventing Campfile from replacing Joseph Zen Bauer as the new Pirates’ head coach.
“There is only one problem [Komphela joining Pirates] Velakazi said the money would be due to their contact clause in Sundowns Citizen.
“But other than that, I don’t see anything stopping him from joining the pirates.”
After the Soviet giants added Mandela Nasikazi, a former Comfella aide, to their technical team earlier this month, the future of Zen Boyer among pirates is reportedly uncertain.
Nikikazi joined the Buckeyes to lead the Lemontoli Golden Arrows to fourth place in the PSL during the 2020/21 season and has a good relationship with Kamfila.
After the Pirates failed to qualify for the Champions League this season, Volkazi believes Comfella will improve the team.
“Steve is great, he has experience, he’s been around and I’m sure he’s a guy who wouldn’t just go to the pirates without analyzing the pirates,” he added.
“He will know where the club is lacking, where they are strong, where they should be placed, and where they should start.
Comfella worked under co-head coaches Mankoba Mangkithi and Rouhani Mokina when Sundowns clinched their fourth consecutive PSL title last season.
He added: “He is the kind of coach who believes that before doing anything, he has to analyze. We will look at what happened at the club last season.”
“So, he will come up with whatever he finds and answer the questions.”
He served as head coach at the Caesar Chiefs, a rival to the Pirates between 2015 and 2018.
