A shocking incident and an angry indifference among Indians has emerged in Davis Central Park, California, USA.
Here the statue of President Mahatma Gandhi in the park was damaged and destroyed by unknown chaotic elements.
The anger of the Indian-American community has erupted across the country after the incident unfolded. Describing it as ‘hate crime’, he has demanded arrest of the culprits soon and severe punishment.
Six feet tall statue of Gandhi damaged
According to the Indian Express , Mahatma Gandhi’s bronze-built statue of 6 feet high and weighing 650 pounds (294 kg) was installed in the Central Park of Davis city.
In the past, someone damaged it and dropped it. On January 27 last morning, a park employee found the statue fallen.
Half of the statue’s face was missing and half was severely damaged. Davis’ Councilman Lucas Freish said the matter was under intense scrutiny.
The severity of the case can be understood- Doroshov
Davis Police Department Deputy Chief Paul Doroshov said, “The statue has cultural significance for a community in the city. It is understandable in its seriousness.”
Explain that this statue was donated by the Government of India to Davis while the Organization of Minorities in India (OFMI) has opposed it and demanded its removal. Davis then voted overwhelmingly to install the statue in the city.
Foreign Ministry condemned the incident
In the case, the Indian Ministry of External Affairs tweeted, ‘On January 28, the statue of Mahatma Gandhi was broken by unknown persons in the Central Park of Davis city. India strongly condemns malicious and hateful acts against the symbol of peace and justice in the world.
Indian-Americans are angry about the incident
There is anger among Indian-Americans about this incident and they have expressed deep sorrow over it.
Gaurang Desai of Friends of India Society International (FISI) has said that anti-India and anti-Hindu fundamentalist organizations and Khalistani separatists have created an atmosphere of hatred. This incident should be investigated under ‘Hate Crime’. This is an insult not only to Mahatma Gandhi but to Indians and Indian Americans.
Pro-Khalistan organization praised the incident
Here, a pro-Khalistan organization in California praised the incident by sharing a photo of the damaged statue. Not only that, they have called it a good day.
Efforts were also made to remove mention of India from books in schools- Gaurang
Gaurang said, “Protestant organizations and Khalistani separatists also tried to remove mention of India from California school books.”
He said that in the year 2016, OFMI had launched a campaign to remove mentions of ‘India’ from sixth and seventh-grade books and replace them with ‘South Asia’.
However, this controversial demand was rejected by the California Department of Education following heavy opposition from family and students.
